John Lyon School year begins with happy and healthy first day back

The first day back at School for almost six months has seen John Lyon boys in all years return to a new Covid-safe campus.

Having had online lessons and activities throughout Summer Term and after the summer holidays, boys and teachers returned to School on Thursday 3rd September.

Many weeks of preparation meant the School was ready for the first day back, with sanitising stations throughout the School, signage showing pupils in which directions to enter and move between buildings, and new protocols and policies in place setting out how year group bubbles will work.

School lunches are back on the menu, albeit with re-designed food handling and seating layout, and the start and end of each school day will work differently with parents asked not to enter the School site at any point.

Revised protocols and risk assessments for Music, Drama and Sport, as well as co-curricular and extra-curricular activities mean that John Lyon can retain a busy timetable of both lessons and wider activities, with more being added as the days and weeks progress.

Policies have also addressed the personal safety of each pupil and teacher, with guidelines allowing for face coverings to be worn if wanted and setting out clear expectations for how everyone interacts with each other while on the School site.

The busy weeks ahead of the first day back also saw A-Level students and GCSE pupils pick up their excellent exam results and the finishing touches being put to a brand-new STEAM Laboratory and fully-redesigned Lyon Building.

Speaking at the end of the first day back, John Lyon Head Miss Katherine Haynes said: “It has been a joy to return to the School site and to see so many pupils who are clearly thrilled to be back.

“The past weeks have seen an immeasurable amount of work going on behind the scenes to ensure we could be Covid-safe and able to open. It’s a great testament to the School’s pupils and staff that the first day back has gone so smoothly. Some aspects of School life are likely to look different for some time to come but we are still looking forward to a busy and productive Autumn Term.”
