Located in the Lyon building, the Gordon Surtees Library offers a calm, welcoming environment designed for quiet independent study, research, and reading for pleasure. The Library’s mission is to enhance and enrich the School curriculum, meet the needs of pupils and staff, and inspire a lifelong love of reading and learning. We encourage and support our pupils to become confident, independent users of their reading and study space.

Open throughout the School day and extending into before- and after-School hours, the Library provides access to an extensive collection of books, eBooks, journals, newspapers, careers guides, and online resources, including JSTOR. Pupils are encouraged to play an active role in shaping the collection by suggesting new materials for acquisition.

The Library supports and celebrates the School’s reading culture by offering a diverse selection of fiction and non-fiction texts suitable for all age groups. Regularly updated reading lists and curated collections ensure pupils have access to canonical award-winning titles and contemporary authors. Pupils are encouraged to engage with the English department to continue conversations around reading, fostering a shared enthusiasm for literature. As part of the curriculum, regular and routine class visits to the Library take place.

The Library is a shared space where everyone is welcome and valued, and we are committed to ensuring it remains a safe, quiet place for study, discovery, and inspiration.

The gadget that will have the biggest impact on literacy is already out there. It’s called a book.
