John Lyon offers a broad education to pupils who aspire to achieve excellence in all they do. As such, the admissions procedure is designed both to reveal applicants’ ability as well as to judge their potential.
We look to offer places to able young pupils who have a great attitude to learning combined with a desire to be the best that they can be.
And as of September 2021, girls as well as boys will be welcomed as new pupils to John Lyon.

The school is academically selective, but here the term ‘potential’ is not just rhetoric. All applicants are interviewed by senior staff (at 13, all by the head), with the intention of snuffling out ‘those happy to be busy, active and willing to push themselves’.
