Sport

Sport is of central importance at John Lyon. We believe competitive team games and individual sporting disciplines play an essential role in developing healthy, well-rounded pupils.

The School has a number of key sports, notably Hockey, Football, Cricket, Athletics and Badminton. Increasingly, disciplines such as Water Polo and Basketball are growing in popularity with our pupils. And the list doesn’t stop there. Through timetabled games lessons and our strong Extra-Curricular Programme, we are also able to offer Swimming, Archery, Golf, Cross Country, Gymnastics, Karate, Squash and Table Tennis to pupils.

John Lyon can boast excellent sporting facilities. At our Senior School site there is a large sports hall, fitness suite, 25m swimming pool and an outdoor practice pitch/court. At our Prep School site, there is an indoor heated swimming pool and a dedicated AstroTurf court. At the nearby 25-acre Sudbury Fields, we have ten Football pitches, as well as three Cricket squares, an artificial wicket, a large pavilion with hospitality facilities and an Archery range. The School has both indoor and outdoor Cricket nets. John Lyon also has extensive access to sporting facilities at Harrow School, including a new Athletics track, a nine-hole Golf course and Tennis, Squash and Badminton courts.

Teaching staff in our Sports Department strive for excellence, often identifying talent early through house competitions and regular fixtures against other schools at all ages. Many pupils go on to represent John Lyon at county, regional and national level. They also work hard to ensure that all pupils – including those who may not think they are naturally ‘sporty’- have opportunities to fulfil their potential.

The School offers competitive entrance scholarships in Sport at 11, 13 and 16.
