The inaugural Patani Lecture took place on Thursday 12 May and was delivered by Professor Hugh Montgomery OBE of University College London, who was appointed as an Officer of the Order of British Empire for his services in Intensive Care Medicine and Climate Change.
The Patani Lecture Series has been enabled as part of a very generous donation from the Patani family and is designed to enthuse and stretch aspiring scientist pupils, as part of the Excellence Programme which provides Academic Enrichment for John Lyon pupils. The Patani donation has also provided the school with some state-of-the-art science equipment, which has been and will be used by current and future John Lyon pupils.
The Lecture began with a pre-event drinks reception in the Mall, where selected students and teachers had the chance to speak to Professor Montgomery and the Patani family. The pupils who attended enjoyed hearing about Professor Montgomery’s experience of working as an Intensive Care doctor during the pandemic. Hugh kindly offered pupils invaluable advice about careers in science.
The reception was followed by a lecture on the topic of ‘Climate Change Messaging’. Varun from Lower Sixth introduced the talk and Q&A session.
Professor Montgomery’s lecture was fascinating and thought-provoking, explaining how Climate Change is going to affect the youth of today and how governments have not done enough to reduce global warming. Hugh described how people should invoke an emotional response when talking about climate change and, as a result, more people would take action to be more eco-friendly. Finally, Hugh informed the audience of what they can do to combat global warming, such as installing solar panels, switching to renewable energy providers and cutting back or omitting meat-containing products. The lecture then concluded with a question and answer session, with a range of questions from students, teachers and parents.
Our very first Patani Lecture was a tremendous success, with attendees experiencing an enjoyable and insightful evening. We were delighted to have had Professor Montgomery deliver this inaugural lecture and we are grateful to the Patani family and our Excellence team for all their support.
