Cllr David Simmonds CBE MP visit

It was a real privilege, on Friday 21 January, to welcome Cllr David Simmonds CBE MP, who spoke superbly to a packed Boyd Campbell Hall audience comprising Year 10, 11 and Sixth Form pupils. Many thanks to David Simmonds MP for visiting us. His explanations of politics in action further enabled our pupils to understand the layers of national and local government.

Vinay, our Head Boy, was one of the pupils that led on the interview. This is what he had to say about his experience…

“It was a pleasure to take part in the interview with David Simmons MP. I asked him about the role of a backbencher in Parliament, and how much power they have if the government is dominant in the legislative agenda. His answer on how backbenchers can influence government legislation, such as a recent bill on the environment, helped to develop my understanding further about backbench MPs. I also asked him, amongst other topics, on Private Members Bills, climate change and his role as both a Councillor and an MP.”

The full talk was recorded internally and is available to watch below.
