Community to be celebrated on John Lyon Values Day
Community will be at the forefront of John Lyon’s annual Values Day, as pupils and and staff take up challenges to raise funds for the School’s chosen charity.
Taking place remotely, this year’s Values Day will focus solely on Community, one of the eight School Values alongside Ambition, Excellence, Innovation, Resolve, Heritage, Enquiry and Creativity.
As the School continues to observe the current lockdown situation, with learning and teaching taking place remotely, it was felt Community would be the most appropriate of the Values to celebrate, encouraging the School community to do something for the people around them, and at the same time challenging themselves.
All pupils and staff have been tasked with completing their own “2.6 Challenge”, which has been much publicised in recent days owing to the cancellation of the 26.2-mile London Marathon.
The premise is simple: completing a challenge based on the number 26.
Pupils may choose to do something as part of the Sports Department’s Keeping Active @ Home initiative such as a 2.6km walk, run or cycle, 26 press-ups or a two minute and six second plank, or a 262-shot tennis rally with a brother or sister.
Or it could be a non-physical task such as baking 26 cupcakes, writing 26 letters to send to care homes, or having a 26-minute phone call with an elderly or vulnerable relative or member of the community…the possibilities are endless.

Aside from being a lot of fun and worthwhile to the community, the John Lyon Values Day 2.6 Challenge will also benefit the School’s chosen charity for the year, the London North West Healthcare Charity (LNWHC).
LNWHC is based at nearby Northwick Park Hospital, which serves the Harrow community tirelessly and which has been very hard-hit by the global pandemic that we face at this time. The charity helps fund innovative projects that improve patient and staff experience, including cutting-edge technology and medical research. At present they are turning their attentions to supporting hospital staff with vital care packages and mental wellbeing support.
We have asked everyone taking part in the Values Day 2.6 Challenge to make a donation to LNWHC, whether it be £2.62, £26.20 or indeed £262.
And the donations page is also open for anyone else to give, if they are able.
We provide a wide range of sporting activities and opportunities for all pupils.
At our Prep School we concur with educational theorists who emphasise the importance of the creative mind and ‘emotional intelligence’ and ‘wellbeing’ – the need to develop the whole personality and our pupil’s imaginations especially. Drama has the power to liberate the mind.
We encourage our pupils to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. 
At our Prep School, Computing covers the use of electronic technology in all its forms, including computers and other communication devices.

Art is an integral part of our Prep School’s curriculum, providing our pupils with a unique means of expressing their ideas by allowing them to explore new thoughts and give life to their creative minds.
History is taught throughout the School and pupils are encouraged to find out about events and peoples.

French is the language of our nearest neighbours, probably the easiest foreign language for English speakers to learn and, after English, one of the most widely-learned languages worldwide.
The core of every science lesson at our Prep School is about developing every pupil’s curiosity in the world around them. 
Mathematics is a key subject for children of all ages at our Prep School.
English is taught using lively and creative methods through a variety of texts and resources incorporating ICT from Pre-Prep onwards.
