A 13-year-old boy from The John Lyon School has won first prize in a national anti-racism poster competition.

Neehal Shah, from Bushey who is in Year 8, came away with the top award in the Secondary School Year 7-9 Artwork and Multi-Media category of the Show Racism the Red Card competition.

At the prize-giving ceremony at the new Wembley Stadium, he received a signed West Ham shirt as well as an England football, shirt and cap. He met a number of current and former professional football players and managers including Dave Bassett. His prize also includes a tour of the Spurs training ground in September.

“I’m very proud of Neehal’s achievement,” said Kevin Riley, Headmaster of the independent school in Harrow. “It’s not only an excellent piece of artwork, but it also shows Neehal’s understanding of an important social issue.

“Racism, along with other types of discrimination, is looked at in great depth in our SPACE (Social, Personal and Citizenship Education) lessons. As a multi-racial school reflecting our local community, we are committed to developing young men who are unprejudiced and mature, with an ability to recognise and consider ethical and moral matters.”

Neehal’s poster depicted three football players of different racial backgrounds. They were all looking upset as the referee had just shown them the red card.

The annual competition aims to combat racism using footballers as anti-racist role models and has the backing of many top managers and players. It is organised by the anti-racist charity, also called Show Racism the Red Card, which specialises in producing educational resources.
