John Lyon’s extra-curricular programme of sports practices, clubs and activities is a much-loved element of life at John Lyon, aimed at encouraging curiosity, furthering knowledge and nurturing passions outside the School timetable.

Our extra-curricular programme is second to none and allows every boy to flourish as an individual. We believe that activities beyond the classroom are essential to balance the learning in class. They teach resilience, teamwork and leadership, and are seen by many as a distinguishing feature on a university application form and then on a CV.

But above all, a well-rounded pupil is a happy pupil.

We typically offer more than 70 clubs and societies every week that provide a wealth of skills, experiences and opportunities to every pupil, as well as a host of sports practices, which change seasonally.

The list of clubs and societies on offer changes termly, but can typically include: Jazz Band, Art Club, Preparation for University, Architecture, Code Breaking and Maths Puzzle Club, Motet Choir, Christian Union, Biomedical Society, Wind Band, Book and Film Club, the Green Club, Astronomy Club, Beekeeping, Debating Club, R&B Group.

A ‘rounded’ education given a firm emphasis, with a timetabled programme of ‘skills-based’ activities including everything from cooking to changing a tyre. Plenty of trips and societies, from computing to chess. ‘It’s a very broad ranging education,’ commented one contented father.
