John Lyon celebrates the European Day of Languages
On Friday 26 September, we celebrated the European Day of Languages – a day dedicated to promoting and encouraging language learning.
This year we celebrated with an assembly filled with inspiring contributions from our pupils who shared insights into their own languages and cultures. Although the focus is on European languages, pupils spoke in languages from all over the world, including Brazilian and Japanese. As well as hearing variety of languages, pupils were also treated to the Spanish guitar by Aly and a violin performance by Soma – both musical pieces being rooted in European traditions. The schools diversity is one of our greatest strengths, bringing us closer together and enriching our shared experience.
In the UK, fewer people learn second languages compared to the rest of Europe, often due to English being spoken globally. Yet learning another language goes far beyond communication – it develops resilience, memory, concentration, creativity, and cultural understanding. As Nelson Mandela said: “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
