John Lyon offers a range of A-Levels that are designed to academically challenge and stimulate students, preparing them for life beyond school.

At John Lyon, we recognise the considerable step up from GCSE to A-Levels, and our Sixth Form team and academic departments are there to fully support and guide students through.

In Sixth Form, students select three or four A-Level subjects, focusing on the subjects in which they achieved the highest (I)GCSE grades or relevance to what they’d like to do after leaving. Students can choose from a diverse range, including:

    • English Literature
    • Mathematics and Further Mathematics
    • Biology, Chemistry and Physics
    • Geography, History, Politics and Philosophy
    • Economics and Business
    • Classical Civilisation and Classical Greek
    • French, Spanish and Latin
    • Computer Science
    • Music, Music Technology, Art and Drama.

The emphasis in the Sixth Form curriculum is on independent study, critical thought and intellectual ambition – preparing and supporting students for life beyond John Lyon.

Sixth Form Entry Requirements

Students can enhance their academic skills with an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) or a Higher Research Project (HRP).

“Pupils display very good study skills. They are taught and practice study skills through subject-specific activities, EPQ and presentations from external organisations.” ISI

An EPQ is an externally assessed project worth 0.5 of an A-Level, providing a fantastic opportunity for students to develop an interest that is not covered within the curriculum. The assessment objectives focus on four key skills: planning and time management, effective use of resources, producing a final report or artefact, and evaluating personal learning.

The HRP is an internally assessed award across Mathematics, Sciences, Humanities or the Arts. The HRP is both taught and research led, helping students to develop the study skills for university.

The Goldhawk Diploma is a unique and central feature of the John Lyon Sixth Form education, giving expression to our belief in an all-round education. Named after a former student from 1925-1927, N P Goldhawk, who epitomises our vision of a John Lyon Sixth Former – a successful all-rounder, Head Boy, Head of House, 1st XI Cricket Captain, Editor of the Lyonian Magazine, School Librarian and Chair of the Senior Debating Society.
