LIFE SKILLS & ENRICHMENT
From weekly Goldhawk Lectures to a full week of Enrichment in Lower Sixth, students build critical soft-skills needed for life beyond school – communication, empathy, teamwork and resilience. As we know A-Levels are a stressful time, we also make sure students’ wellbeing is supported.
For our aspirational students who are looking at applying for Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry and Architecture at Oxbridge, we offer our Elite University Programme.
LEADERSHIP & COMMUNITY
Students have a plethora of meaningful leadership roles they can take on that help shape school life and values, including the Head Prefect team, the mentoring programme, clubs and sports captains and so much more.
VOLUNTEERING & CHARITY
All Sixth Formers are part of the Blackwell Volunteering Programme, offering them the chance to be mentors, support local charities and so much more.
SPORTS & THE ARTS
With excellent facilities and specialist coaching, students can participate in a wide range of sports, including football, cricket, water polo, athletics, tennis and sailing.
Music, Drama or Art are also offered to students who wish to continue these as hobbies and not academically.

As part of the Harrow Family of Schools, our students are offered unique experiences and exchanges across the world.
A rare and coveted membership of the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain was awarded to Sixth Form student Louis Tyrrell in 2020, who will now train and perform with the country’s very best young actors.
After submitting his application, Louis attended a group improvisation and exercise workshop morning at the Lyric Hammersmith theatre before going on to a solo audition and interview. At the same time, similar auditions were taking place in 90 other venues across the country with many hundreds of young hopefuls all aiming for the same few memberships to the prestigious theatre company that has produced some of Britain’s most-loved actors, including Idris Elba, David Harewood, David Oyelowo and Zawe Ashton.
Throughout his time at John Lyon, Louis has been a mainstay of the Drama Department and is well used to auditioning, having appeared in plays and musicals as diverse as Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Peter Shaffer’s The Royal Hunt of the Sun and Cole Porter’s Anything Goes.
Louis said: “In the one-to-one audition and interview I talked about my experiences, my thoughts on recent productions I had seen, and why I wanted to be an actor and what joining the National Youth Theatre would mean to me. For my audition piece I chose The Roses of Eyam, which I like because I could portray different emotions.”
Louis’ membership of the theatre lasts until he is 26-years-old and will give him the opportunity to train and perform with the very best young actors, under leading directors in some of the world’s most famous theatres.

Where National Theatre Connections is unavailable for production, a suitable play with a large ensemble and company is selected to encourage participation and develop the abilities of Drama Scholars who take a leading role in productions. previous Productions have included ‘Emil and the Detectives’ and ‘Lord of the Flies’, ‘D.N.A’ and ‘A Monster Calls’, and shows are given full production value including the opportunity to work with a professional movement director.
All students in Year 7 participate in a performance of a short play, produced and rehearsed during the CCP programme. Production value; lighting, sound and basic costume is used to produce an evening of entertainment designed to develop student confidence, communication and collaboration skills as well as fostering an appreciation for theatre and performance. The festival also serves as an excellent induction into life and Drama at John Lyon.
The annual musical performed at Harrow School has drawn thousands of audience members and a hugely talented cast from local schools. Students work alongside theatre professionals to create an exceptional performance with industry standard production value and perform in the prestigious 350 seat Ryan Theatre, Harrow.
