Top UK universities await John Lyon students after stellar A-Level results
After achieving yet another superb set of A-Level results across the board, Lyonians will once again be making their way to the country’s top universities to take up places in a range of sought after courses.
Whilst the School is well known for its all-round holistic education, expert pastoral care and range of unrivalled opportunities beyond the classroom, this set of results firmly demonstrate its academic prowess. John Lyon firmly believes that academic excellence and pursuits beyond the classroom go hand-in-hand. This is what makes John Lyon Northwest London’s leading co-ed independent school. The School celebrates achievements outside of lessons and, year on year, our results prove that busy students are successful students.
Pupils will be studying competitive courses of which there is high demand, such as Medicine, Chemistry, Mathematics, Engineering, Computing and Data Science, alongside a variety of niche firm options in Real Estate and Property Management, Veterinary Nursing, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Graphic and Media Design. They will be heading to the likes of the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, University College London, Imperial College London, University of York, University of Nottingham, University of Southampton, University of Bath, and London School of Economics and Political Science.
Alexander achieved straight A* A* A* and an additional A* in the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification). With his impressive four A*s, Alexander, who is our outgoing Deputy Head Boy, in our 1st XI football and hockey teams, and who has played leading roles in the last three school musical productions – including Artful Dodger in ‘Oliver!’, Max in ‘The Sound of Music’ and Hopkins in ‘Made in Dagenham’ – will be on his way across the capital to study Medicine at University College London.
Alexander said: “I am extremely relieved that all my hard work has paid off. I would like to thank every single one of my peers, teachers, and most importantly my family for all their support over the years. All of the extra opportunities outside of the classroom I have been fortunate to have at John Lyon have made my seven years here very special. I look forward to starting my next chapter, studying Medicine at UCL.”
Tanveer received A* A* A* A and has been part of our Excellence programme, most recently delivering a talk to his peers and staff on cryptography. He will go on to read Computing at Imperial College London.
Tanveer said: “I feel great – the hard work has most definitely paid off. I was consistent with my studies during Sixth Form, and I believe that is why I achieved these results. I would like to thank my parents and teachers. My teachers have really gone out of their way to support me.”
Basel opened his results to see A* A* A* B and an A in the EPQ. These outstanding results mean that Basel, who is an Academic Scholar and a keen drummer who composes his own music in his spare time, will go on to read Mathematics and Statistics at the prestigious University of Oxford. Basel was part of the John Lyon team who achieved a CREST Gold Award and worked with engineers at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), one of the national scientific research laboratories in the UK.
Basel said: “A huge thanks to my teachers and parents for supporting me throughout this whole process. I am really looking forward to going to Oxford to study Mathematics and Statistics.”
Shyam scored A* A* A and will be studying Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Bath. Shyam is an ‘all-through’ pupil and has been with us since the age of three at our Nursery. During his younger years, he was Head Boy of our Prep School. More recently, Shyam has enjoyed playing electric guitar at School concerts.
Shyam said: “I would like to thank my teachers for helping me both inside and outside of lessons. The support here has been incredible, and I would not have been able to achieve the results without it. I am very pleased with my results, and I am looking forward to studying Engineering. I would recommend John Lyon School to anyone interested in joining at any stage. The Sixth Form experience has been fantastic.”
Toby, who is our outgoing Head Boy, received A* A A. Toby has been a tremendous leader during not only his time as Head Boy but also on the pitch as captain of the 1st XI football team. He will be heading northeast to Newcastle University to study Business, Accounting and Finance (with Work Placements).
Toby said: “I am absolutely thrilled with my results! I want to thank all my teachers for all of their hard work over the last two years – I could not have done it without them. I am very proud of my entire cohort for excellent results all round. I wish them all the very best of luck for the future.”
Varun also achieved A* A A. He is going on to London School of Economics and Political Science to study Data Science. Varun has been a peer mentor with Year 7s, which involves supporting and advising our youngest Senior School pupils.
Varun said: “I am feeling very happy as I have made my parents, brother and friends proud. The teachers have been extremely supportive and have helped me achieve these results. I cannot wait for the challenges that lie ahead.”
Marcus received A* A A A and a further A in EPQ. He will be heading to the coast to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southampton. Marcus was part of the John Lyon team who achieved a CREST Gold Award and worked with engineers at RAL in Oxfordshire. He is also a strong Sixth Form archer and in our elite swimming club.
Marcus said: “It is a great day as I received the results I needed to progress to read Mechanical Engineering. I would like to thank my teachers for navigating me through my A-Level studies. I am relieved I can enjoy the rest of the summer!”
Congratulations from the Head
Mrs Rose Hardy, Head, said: “I am absolutely delighted for our students on their superb A-Level results, enabling them to secure places at leading UK universities. As ever, these results are rightly celebrated alongside so many successes during the academic year in sports, music, drama, art, STEAM, and the wonderful, heartwarming and meaningful charity and community partnerships and events at John Lyon and as part of John Lyon’s Foundation and alongside our Harrow Family of Schools situated around the world.
I am hugely thankful to all of our parents and guardians, who have evidently provided so much support to their children during these hugely important time at Sixth Form. I would also like to mention my brilliant colleagues, who have worked with this cohort to achieve these excellent outcomes.
I wish all our Upper Sixth cohort – now of course our newest Old Lyonians – the very best at university and beyond!”
