World Book Day round-up
At John Lyon, inspiring a love of reading is an integral part of school life and learning and World Book Day provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate and reinforce this.
At the Prep Campus
Pupils at the Prep campus enjoyed a week full of book-themed activities. A highlight was a visit from Ian Whybrow, former Head of English at the Senior School and now a celebrated children’s author, best known for his Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs series. Pupils from Nursery to Year 6 loved listening to him read and learning about his journey as a writer. A Q&A session, followed by a book signing, rounded off what was a truly inspiring experience for all.
As part of the celebrations, pupils also visited Greenhill Library, where library staff introduced them to everything the library has to offer. Pupils enjoyed browsing the shelves and could even borrow books if they brought their library cards, making it a great opportunity to further nurture a love of reading and strengthen connections with the local community.
The week ended on a colourful high with dress-up day, as pupils and staff brought their favourite book characters to life; from the pages to our Prep school. Featuring a library’s worth of classic heroes and modern favourites, the costumes were imaginative and full of personality!
At the Senior Campus
Year 8 and Year 9 pupils also had the opportunity to hear from Ian Whybrow, who shared his experiences as a writer and highlighted the joy of storytelling and reading for pleasure. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the session.
Additionally, a Year 10 Writing Workshop engaged pupils in exploring reading and creative writing through guided exercises.
A variety of World Book Day activities also took place in the library, giving all year groups the chance to enjoy reading, writing, and storytelling in fun and engaging ways. The library was busy throughout the day, and it was wonderful to see so many pupils enthusiastically taking part and embracing their love of books.
