An inspirational session of music and learning

We were delighted to welcome the Starling Quartet, a string ensemble from the Royal Academy of Music to John Lyon for a relaxed lunchtime concert and masterclass. The event brought together the School’s music scholars and pupils from local primary schools, who were invited to join us for the event.

A performance inspired by Folk Melodies
The Starling Quartet’s performances centred on works inspired by folk melodies with highlights including the final movement of String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96 American by Antonín Dvořák, as well as the Lullaby by George Gershwin. The performance was a real treat, impressing everyone who attended.

A musical masterclass
After the concert, John Lyon’s own string quartet, made up of four of the School’s music scholars, worked closely with the visiting musicians in a supportive masterclass. Alongside individual coaching on their solo pieces, which our pupils greatly appreciated, they also performed the Rondeau from Abdelazer by Henry Purcell together. The session offered plenty of practical advice, helping them to refine their technique and grow in confidence as an ensemble.

Reflecting on the experience, Soma (Year 11) said: “The comments made by the quartet were so inspirational and informative. They will be a big help to us in building the standard and reputation of the quartet at John Lyon.”
