British Science Week Celebrations

British Science Week: Inspiring Curiosity
For British Science Week this year, science came to life across the school, as pupils embraced the theme of ‘curiosity’ through a wide range of engaging, hands-on activities.

Discovering Animal Anatomy
Up at the Senior campus, our Biology department guided pupils through a series of dissections including sheep eyes, fish gills and chicken wings. These sessions were aimed at generating enthusiasm for the subject, whilst providing a valuable opportunity for pupils to deepen their understanding of animal anatomy.

Science Highlights at Prep
Down at the Prep, pupils enjoyed a range of hands-on experiments and creative projects. They explored fractions and diffusion using Skittles to see how colours spread at different temperatures, created models of the solar system, and designed and tested windmills to investigate sustainable energy and evaluate their designs.

Senior and Prep: Collaborative Learning
A number of Senior pupils visited our Prep campus to support a series of specially organised workshops. Working alongside Year 4 and Year 5, they helped bring both Physics and Chemistry to life, confidently introducing ideas and concepts to their younger peers with support from teachers. It was a wonderful way to inspire our younger pupils and ignite their curiosity for science.
In the Physics workshop, Year 4 pupils explored light, colour and vision, discovering how the eye works and how we see the world around us. They investigated how colour changes under different lighting, how lenses bend light and how our brains help form images. The session finished with an exciting hands-on challenge, with Senior and Year 4 pupils working together to design and build periscopes.
Year 5 pupils enjoyed their first taste of using Bunsen burners in a Chemistry workshop. With support from Year 10 pupils Jiya and Abbinaya, they carried out flame tests and safely exploring how different substances produce striking colours, like the bright yellow flame of sodium compounds. Pupils approached the experiments with interest and confidence, making it an exciting introduction to hands-on Chemistry.

Assembly and Workshop Explore Genetics and Screening
Year 10–13 pupils attended an inspiring assembly led by Josh Forman from JNetics, exploring the theme ‘Curiosity Saves Lives.’ Josh shared the story of the discovery of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes and their links to breast cancer, highlighting the remarkable work of a female statistician behind the breakthrough. He also explained the important genetic screening programmes that JNetics runs in partnership with the NHS.
Following the assembly, Josh led a hands-on workshop for our Sixth Form biologists, medics, and chemists. Pupils explored the ethical decisions behind genetic screening, learning about different genetic diseases and considering which conditions should be screened for. Students were then tasked with deciding whether they would offer screenings to help future parents identify potential genetic risks. It was a challenging and thought-provoking exercise that brought science and ethics vividly to life.

A Week of Discovery and Collaboration
British Science Week was a wonderful opportunity for pupils to explore, experiment, and learn together. From dissecting specimens and conducting flame tests to building periscopes and tackling real-world ethical dilemmas, curiosity was at the heart of everything we did.
