John Lyon School Celebrates GCSE Success

Following the School’s record-breaking A-Level achievements last week, Year 11 pupils have delivered an exceptionally strong set of results, with top-tier proportions matching and exceeding historic non-pandemic benchmarks. Across the cohort, performance at the highest-grade boundaries was particularly notable. A remarkable 20.4% of all grades awarded were at Grade 9 and proportions across the 9–8, 9–7, 9–6, and 9–5 grade boundaries have also hit their highest levels outside of the pandemic years, with figures expected to rise further following standard post-review processes.

The overall top-end profile proved remarkably strong:

  • 20.4% of entries achieved the top Grade 9, matching the historic Results Day record set in 2024.
  • 43.1% of all grades achieved Grades 9–8 (up from 40.8% on Results Day 2025).
  • 63.9% of all grades reached Grades 9–7 (A*–A equivalent), exceeding recent years.
  • 83.5% of grades were awarded at Grades 9–6, marking a significant leap from 77.6% on Results Day 2025.

“Our Year 11 cohort can be very proud of this strong set of GCSE results. Following our record-breaking A-Level results last week, these GCSE outcomes demonstrate the dedication, academic ambition, and resilience of our pupils, alongside the unwavering support of our teaching staff. Matching our top-end Grade 9 record while achieving highest-ever non-pandemic proportions at 9–6 and 9–5 reflects the continuous elevation of academic standards across the School.” – Mrs Rose Hardy.

Additional statistics from this year’s GCSE attainment include:

  • English Language: 28% of pupils achieved Grade 9, and almost 50% of the cohort secured Grades 9–8.
  • Mathematics: Over 50% of pupils achieved Grades 9–8, with over 75% attaining a minimum of Grade 7.
  • French: 32% of pupils achieved Grade 9, while 68% of the cohort reached Grades 9–8.
  • Geography: Close to 50% of students achieved a minimum of Grade 8.
  • Physics: Bordering 50% of students achieved a minimum of Grade 8.

Another proud landmark in our 150-year history, we celebrated our first co-ed cohort receiving their GCSE results. With small class sizes, subject specialisms, and a newly unveiled suite of GCSE options, the selective day school proudly celebrates these achievements during its 150th anniversary year.
