Quainton Hall

In November 2020, John Lyon and Quainton Hall came together to offer an all-through education to children, from Nursery to Sixth Form.

The combined School brings together John Lyon’s 600 pupils aged 11 to 18, with Quainton Hall’s 200 pupils aged two to 11, to create a School for the 21st century with the benefit of a great history and heritage.

A shared Ethos

John Lyon and Quainton Hall are schools that share similar educational values. Both place a great focus on the importance of an all-round education; that learning and development both in and outside the classroom help develop confident, successful and happy children. The schools have come together with both being in positions of strength. Pupil numbers are secure and both schools have recently received the highest Excellent-Excellent school inspection reports.

A simplified route to senior school

Quainton Hall and John Lyon – Prep and Senior together: We are an all-through co-educational school from 3 to 18. It is expected that the majority of children who enter Quainton Hall will automatically progress through each stage of the Prep School and transition into John Lyon Senior School. For this to be the case, children need to demonstrate that they have sufficient ability to cope with the demands of the curriculum at each next stage, and have the skills and maturity to do so successfully. In the transition from Prep to Senior, all children will sit an academic assessment, the results of which will assist in the smooth transfer from Year 6 into Year 7. Guidance will be provided to parents about the transition process from Quainton Hall Prep to John Lyon Senior School.

Both Quainton Hall and John Lyon maintain good relationship with other local schools.

Shared benefits

The facilities at Quainton Hall — Swimming pool, Art and Design Centre, AstroTurf pitch, ICT suite and modern classrooms with interactive whiteboards — are exceptional for Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep education. In becoming an important part of a larger senior School younger children can now access even greater facilities, such as 25 acres of playing fields and bespoke Drama and Music studios. When and wherever possible pupils and teachers on both sites will work collaboratively for the benefit of all.

There is now also greater capacity to develop the facilities on the Quainton Hall site on a scale not previously possible, and extra expertise to deliver these developments efficiently and with minimal disruption to the education of the pupils. One of the first completed projects at Quainton Hall has been a full upgrade to the School’s kitchens, to allow us to further improve the popular School lunches. Quainton Hall also benefits from now being part of the wider John Lyon’s Foundation, which includes John Lyon’s Charity and Harrow School.

Next Steps

John Lyon and Quainton Hall continue to operate from their own School sites, in Harrow-on-the-Hill and in central Harrow. Each school continues to have its own leadership team, which will work closely together.
