Online Open Day

Online Open Day

Welcome to our Online Open Day, created as a result of having to cancel our Summer Term Open Evening and Autumn Term Open Day.

On this specially-created page, you will hear from teachers and pupils, have a two-minute video tour of the School site and facilities, learn more about our academic subjects with the option to ask questions directly to each department, and have the opportunity to register for one of our School in Action days in the Autumn Term.

As well as that, there are links to pages on our website we think will be of most use to you as prospective parents, including information on our move to coeducation, bursaries and scholarships, school inspection and Good Schools Guide review, and details of our Admissions department.

Welcome Talks

At our open events, prospective pupils and parents get the chance to hear from members of the School community, who give short talks about life at John Lyon.

In place of those live talks, three members of staff and two students have recorded their talks for you, from home.

Below you will hear from John Lyon Head Miss Katherine Haynes, who welcomes you to the School.

Next, our Head Boy Husain and Year 9 pupil Oscar talk about their lives and experiences at the School.

Finally, Head of Year 7 Mr Huw Jones talks about how we manage the transition to John Lyon for new pupils, and Senior Teacher in charge of Admissions, Mr Darren Boylan gives greater detail about the admissions process and certain key dates in a longer video.

School Tour

A tour of the School site is at the centre of every open event.

This video will give you a brief look at the facilities we enjoy here at John Lyon.

Academic Subjects

At a normal open event, you would have the opportunity to visit every academic department, talking to teachers about their subjects.

We have now moved detailed subject information online. On each page you will find details of what pupils will learn in different School years, the exam boards we currently use, John Lyon successes in those subjects and career options that may come from studying that subject.

Each page also has a contact form, so you can ask questions directly to that department, which will be replied to by the Head of Department.

School in Action

Every year we hold a number of School in Action sessions for prospective pupils and parents. These 90-minute sessions allow visitors to see the School on a regular working day.

Owing to the cancellation of our May Open Evening and September Open Day, we have planned a lot more School in Action sessions, which will take place every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in September, October and November, which you are able to register for now.

More useful information

Having educated boys from Harrow and surrounding areas since 1876, the John Lyon School will welcome its first girls as pupils into Year 7 from September 2021.

Daily life at John Lyon sees pupils learning both inside and outside the classroom, taking part in lessons, sport, the arts and a rich and varied programme of activities.

School Inspection: EXCELLENT

The start of 2020 brought the best possible news for John Lyon: a much-coveted 'double excellent' school inspection report.

We are committed to widening access for local families, enabling the children of those who could not otherwise afford the fees to benefit from our all-round independent school education in North West London.
