The first full week of the School year has seen the return of John Lyon’s Healthy Lifestyle Programme, aimed at providing information and encouragement to pupils in all aspects of fitness and diet.
The collaborative project run by the School’s Sports Department and Medical Centre is now in its fourth year and in that time has promoted good health, wellbeing and physical activity in all pupils to help maximise their potential both inside and outside of the classroom and instill a culture which will lead to healthy decision making for life.
The Healthy Lifestyle Programme launch saw all pupils in Years 7 to 10 participate in five fitness tests: the Yo-Yo beep test; 20m Sprint; Agility T-Test; and Vertical Jump.
The results of each are recorded in personal Healthy Lifestyle Portfolios, which only the pupil, their Sports teachers and the School Nurse can see. The results can be compared to previous attempts at the same tasks and again used in future when the tasks are repeated.
The Programme also looks to give understanding, advice and support on how lifestyle choices, including diet, directly impact not only on health, but also mood and ability to focus.
John Lyon’s Head of Football, Mr Rob Rice, who helps coordinate the Programme said: “The benefits of implementing the Healthy Lifestyle Programme are clear – physical activity and academic performance are clearly linked and learning important lessons now will set pupils up to make good, healthy choices for life. We hope they will all enjoy embracing the Programme and work with us to help them maximise their potential both inside and outside the classroom.”
