Gold Medals for Lyonian Biologists!

Following the success of the Sixth-Form Biology Olympiad, Year 9 and Year 10 pupils were entered for the equivalent Biology Challenge. 45,400 UK students took part this year.

The challenging competition included questions on the school curriculum but also rewarded those students whose knowledge of the subject has been increased by reading books and magazines, watching natural history programmes, taking notice of the news media for items of biological interest, and being generally aware of natural flora and fauna.

Three John Lyon students were awarded gold medals, putting them in the top 5% of the country. The pupils were: Lucas Ramackers and Arun Karunadasa in 10NJB and Amaroo Brown in 9JOC. In addition, seven pupils received silver medals and 24 received bronze. Furthermore, 46 additional pupils were either highly commended or commended.

Lucas, who scored the highest across the year groups, stated, “I am thrilled by the gold medal – I was able to apply my biological knowledge to new contexts and enjoyed the tasks.”

Dr Kochaj, Head of Biology, added, “I am delighted by the number of medals our pupils have won. My prediction is that many of these students will go on to top Russell Group universities, including Oxbridge, and eventually become excellent doctors, researchers, and policymakers.”
