Careers in Technology Event

On Tuesday 7th March, employees from small start-ups to Google came along to share their experiences working in technology with parents and students.  Three Old Lyonians spanning the decades were welcomed back: Andy Burgess, (1983), Nick Matthews (2001) and Vishay Karia (2018). It was fascinating to hear about Andy’s, Nick’s and Vishay’s journey into technology careers in Google, Culture Amps and as founder of Project Housing respectively. This was despite having studied subjects such as business and politics at university, emphasising that a successful career in technology goes beyond subject requirements, with the focus on passion, skills and attitude.

In addition to our School Community, the Careers Department had the pleasure of welcoming Aleks and George, from Xapien, an artificial intelligence software development company, Leena, a Global Cyber Threat Intelligence Lead at Simply Business and Mizu and Richard from Colt Technology Services. This offered the audience an impressive array of panellists for an informative Q&A session. This was followed by a browse of employer stands, which allowed parents and students more intimate discussions with our technology representatives.

“I found the talk on technology very interesting. I think that this was an amazing opportunity to try and learn something new. I usually go to all the Career talks to widen my horizons and get a better understanding of my future choices. I spoke to many of the visitors about what they did and how they successfully achieved in their fields. The main answer was, ‘follow your passions” as it is easier to succeed doing something that you love. I am glad I came to this event.”  McKenna (8AJM)
