Year 9 Induction

Welcome to John Lyon

Under normal circumstances we would be delighted to welcome you in to school for our New Parents Information Evening and welcome your son to his Induction Day, however, sadly this year due to these extraordinary circumstances this has not been possible.

I hope you will find in the words and videos on this page, as well as in the pages of the attached information booklet, useful information about your son’s transition to John Lyon. We look forward to meeting you all again in person in the very near future. In the meantime, if you have any queries, please feel free to contact our registrar Rebecca Davies at

A welcome from the Director of Studies, Mr Tim Lewis

Welcome to John Lyon and I look forward to seeing your sons here at the School in September.

As Director of Studies, I have responsibility for the learning and teaching throughout the School. In Year 9 pupils follow a core curriculum that spans English, Mathematics, the sciences, humanities, and digital learning alongside PE, Games and the School’s Co-Curricular Programme. They will also have options amongst the arts and languages. Further specialisation begins in February when pupils pick their options for the GCSE years.

Pupils in Year 9 will receive homework from three or four subjects per day of approximately 30 minutes each. Homework tasks are delivered online accompanied by the necessary resources. The tasks also have clear due dates to assist the pupils with organising their individual workload. Some tasks will be submitted online, some will be completed on paper and handed in physically. Mathematics and languages are set from the beginning of Year 9; we use the entrance examination results to give a very loose, initial setting and this is honed further with test results throughout the year. This is not something to worry about – our pupils come to us with high ability and the School achieves excellent examination results throughout its sets.

Other useful information

Bring your Own Device (BYOD)
As you will be aware the School operates a BYOD policy for which all pupils are always expected to have a device with them in School. It is important pupils have a device by September so that they can fully participate in all School activities. Please find further details in the attached information booklet with regards to suitable specifications for devices as well as for some recommendations as to where a recommended device can be purchased.

School Bus Service
The School currently operates a coach service in conjunction with Brent Community Transport. You will find specific details including the routes included within the attached information booklet. The School’s Central Administration Team are available to assist you with any enquiries in this area and can be contacted by emailing

All parents must complete and return the medical form for their son before the start of the School year in September. As well as containing important information for the School, completion of the form means pupils can take part in sporting fixtures and attend trips and excursions.

If your son has any specific medical conditions, please contact the School Nurse, Miss Charlotte Robinson in advance on him joining at This will ensure we can have the appropriate support in place for when he joins us in September. If you have stated that your son requires emergency medication — such as for asthma, allergies or diabetes — we ask that he carries his medication with him always and for you provide a spare set of medication which will be held in the medical centre. We offer vaccinations to boys in line with the School vaccination programme.  Boys in Year 9 will receive the DPT booster and Meningitis ACWY vaccinations. If your son is joining Year 9 and has not received 2 HPV vaccinations, please make the School Nurse aware.

School Uniform
You will find attached in the information booklet all the key information with regards to School uniform and kit lists for your son. This year uniform fitting at The Outfitters will be by appointment only. You can book an appointment for your son’s uniform fitting at this link.

Excellence Programme
The John Lyon Excellence Programme runs from Year 7 to the Upper Sixth and aims to promote academic excellence and a passion for learning throughout the School.

At the start of every term you will receive an Excellence Newsletter together with the Excellence Programme listing enrichment opportunities available to boys. These include:

– JLx sessions: fortnightly short 15-minute lunchtime talks on a wide range of subjects
– School-wide competitions to enter
– Academic Society meetings at which pupils in all years present short lectures on topics they have researched
– Evening events: We aim to host one evening event a term involving one or more external guest speakers.

Attending these events and entering the competitions will help your son gain a broader education outside of the curriculum. We believe this is key to success in a dynamic world.

Every term boys get nominated to be on our Excellence list; those boys who are working very hard and aiming to achieve academic excellence. It is by achieving high grades and regularly attending Excellence events that boys get nominated to be on this list. Boys on the Excellence list get rewarded with Excellence pins, a diamond shaped pin that boys are proud to wear, and that we are proud to see them wear.

The John Lyon community look forward to seeing and working with your sons in September.

We wish you and your families a safe and enjoyable summer.
