Academic mentoring enables Sixth Form students (mentors) to academically mentor a younger student (mentee). As a result, mentors must reflect upon their own understanding of a chosen subject and consider ways they can adapt their knowledge to aid the progress of the mentee. Mentors must be creative in their approach to the academic mentoring sessions, ensuring the mentee remains focused and is learning via their preferred learning style. This, in turn, helps to facilitate academic rigour in the lower years as well as fostering a community spirit at JLS. Mentors demonstrate tenacity and responsibility, ensuring their mentee progresses throughout the program. Through thorough tracking it is evident that the scheme has made a significant difference to the achievement, confidence and enthusiasm of both the mentors and mentees involved.
