Two-thirds of all GCSEs taken at The John Lyon School gained an A* or A grade - and virtually every pupil hit the Government's national target. High flyers at the independent school in Harrow on the Hill included 12 boys who achieved six or more A* grades and 11 who had straight As or A*s in all their subjects.
The school underlined its reputation for excellence in Drama, with a remarkable 97% of boys taking the subject gaining an A or A* grade. And John Lyon's traditional strength in Science was highlighted by the achievements of boys taking three separate Science GCSEs - in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Although this is more academically demanding than the more common Double Science GCSE, the A*/A rate among these boys was 88%.
The Head, Miss Katherine Haynes, said: "These excellent results continue the trend of recent years and are a very promising sign of future success as students prepare to embark on their A-level studies. I would like to congratulate the boys on these results, which reflect hard work and application on their part as well as excellent teaching and dedication from our staff.
"Special congratulations must go to three boys: Hashim Bhattee, who obtained nine GCSEs at A* and two at A; Hannes Pardo, who gained eight A*s and three As, and Samuel Horsley, whose ten GCSEs included nine A*s."
Significant statistics among the GCSE results for the 93-strong Year 11 included:
• Over a fifth of all examinations were graded A*
• 66% of GCSEs were awarded at A* / A – compared to just 22.6% nationally
• The A*-B rate exceeded 90%
• For the third consecutive year, 99% of boys achieved the Government's preferred benchmark of at least five A*-C passes including English and Mathematics
• In Religious Studies, from 63 candidates, 86% gained grades A*/A.
