High-flyers A-level success at The John Lyon School

Almost a quarter of the Upper Sixth at The John Lyon School gained straight As and A*s in their A-levels.

One in ten of all the A-levels taken at the independent school in Harrow was awarded the new A* grade – for marks of above 90% – while 93% were at grades A*-C. The school also recorded a 100% pass rate (A-E) for the fifth consecutive year among the 76 boys in the year.

The Head, Miss Katherine Haynes, said: “I would like to congratulate the many boys who have achieved the results they needed to secure places at leading universities. There has been a great deal of speculation nationally about how the A* grade would operate, but I am delighted to say that, here at least, it has gone to those boys who truly deserved to be rewarded for their attainment.”

Miss Haynes lauded the achievements of the school’s young mathematicians – there were 10 A*s for A-level Mathematics.

“I am also pleased that the school has maintained its longstanding reputation for success in boys securing places to read Medicine or Dentistry,” she added. Two of the 18 boys achieving straight As and A*s – Rushil Lachhani,18 of Stanmore, and Akhil Patel, 18, also of Stanmore – won Dentistry places, at Bristol and Manchester respectively. A third straight-A boy, Byron Ranesh, 18, of Edgware, will read Medicine at UCL, while Saneel Patel, achieved the grades needed for his Dentistry place at Cardiff.

Byron said: “Medicine is really what I saw myself doing. I wanted to give something back to the community. It’s a really varied job: as a GP, you work as an educator and a counsellor at the same time.”

The Head of School, Freddie Herman, of Pinner, was also among the straight-A candidates, securing his place at Durham to read History. His mother, Laura, who works as the School Counsellor, spoke of her relief: “It’s pretty nerve-wracking for parents, as well as for the boys! We are delighted he has got what he wanted: the school has provided everything he has needed.”

Significant highlights in the school’s results included:
• One boy, Guneet Kahai, achieved three A* grades, while two more, Shabbir Merali and Tom Stevenson, gained two A*s
• An increased proportion of boys achieving the top grade – 24% of examinations at A and A* this year, up from 21% at A in 2009
• A total of 43% of examinations taken at the school were awarded an A or A*.

Miss Haynes added that, in line with the national trend, the school had seen an increase in boys who had not secured their first-choice university places, even though in many cases they had missed the requirements by only the narrowest of margins. The school provided staff support as well as additional computers and telephones so that boys could easily negotiate with universities’ admissions departments.
