| National athletics triumphs and Sports Day records galore report and photo gallery - July 2010 |
Fresh from smashing the School’s 30-year-old discus record at Sports Day, Year 10 pupil Luke Roach-Christie (pictured right) also won the discipline at the English Schools Athletic Championship.Luke’s 34.87m throw on John Lyon’s Sports Day at Harrow School’s athletics field easily beat the previous discus records for the Colts age group (Years 10 and 11), which was set in 1980 at 24.75m. He then triumphed in the English Schools Athletic Championships – again, this was against older boys because he is in the Year 10 and 11 age group known as ‘Inter Boys’ – and goes on to represent England in Glasgow against Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Luke now holds six School records. Another Year 10 boy, Anthony Jeffrey, made the semi-finals of the Inter Boys 100m at the English Schools. His time of 11.17s means he is the quickest Year 10 in the country. And his new 200m School record of 22.8s set on Sports Day is quicker than the Sixth Form School record! Like Luke, Anthony holds six School records. Other Sports Day records to fall included the 1.34m high jump by Stephan Papet (pictured immediately below right) in the Oldfield age category. There were also multiple successes for the School at this year’s Middlesex Schools Championships, with a win for Luke, as well as second places for Anthony, for Babatundae Adelekan (the holder of five School records) at 200m and for Jemie Irkuwu, discus. Scott Wilsher (200m), Alistair Shake (triple jump), Adekoye Adewale (200m) Rohan Singh (1,500m) Robert Ivory (high jump) and Bavesh Soneji (1,500m) all made the finals of their events. Bhavesh also beat a 1,500m School record dating from 1982 this year, running 4m 25.81s.
