Prestigious Royal Academy exhibition place for young artist at The John Lyon School - July 2010

Daniel's photograph Passion beyond FlamesYoung artist Daniel Cordas’s striking photograph of a Japanese chef has won a place in a national online exhibition run by the Royal Academy.

The image taken by Daniel, a Year 12 pupil at The John Lyon School, Harrow, was among 56 artworks selected for the Academy’s A-level Summer Exhibition.

Examples of his work are also currently on display in an end-of-year art show in the independent boys’ school’s own dedicated art gallery.

John Lyon’s Head, Miss Katherine Haynes, said: “We are an academic school that also seeks to nurture students with talents in the arts or in sport. Daniel deserves to be congratulated on this considerable achievement.”

Miss Lorna Hope, the Head of Art at John Lyon, added: “Daniel has made excellent progress this year. The title he chose for his award-winning photo, Passion beyond Flames, is particularly apt because Daniel is a very passionate artist with a strong interest in the impact lighting has on a scene.”

Daniel CordasDaniel,17, of Ealing, entered three pieces of art in the competition and has since received a winner’s certificate for the Japanese chef photo, which can be seen at www.royalacademy.org.uk/alevel until 22nd August.

“I took this photograph in an open kitchen restaurant, and managed to capture a burst of flames,” he explains. “Due to the camera being in a no flash mode, the light of the flame lights up the whole scene, with the beautiful vibrancy of the flames as the main focus of the picture, lighting up the chef’s face and the walls behind, in contrast to the dark edges of the photograph. The glass of wine in the bottom left hand corner interestingly captures the whole flame in the small glass.”

Daniel, who is pictured with some other examples of his art in the studio at The John Lyon School, hopes either to go to art college after leaving school next year or to study architecture at university.

The winning artworks were selected by Royal Academician Richard Wilson, RA curator Dr Adrian Locke, and third-year RA Schools student Rachael Champion.
