| An opportunity to SHINE! |

Hosted by John Lyon (JLS) in its Science and Drama Building opened last year, the SHINE Harrow Project offers weekly classes on Saturdays in the Summer Term to Year 8 children from schools in the Harrow Independent State School Partnership (ISSP). The project is funded by the SHINE national charity and is now in its second year, with Sixth-Formers brought in as mentors for the first time this year. One of the aims for 2010 was to attract more girls to the project; a target successfully attained, with 36 girls taking part from a total of 52 children. “We’re very aware that we are fortunate to have such excellent facilities,” said Miss Katherine Haynes, Head of John Lyon, an independent boys’ School. “We are delighted when we discover opportunities to share those facilities with others in the community. There is also the quid quo pro element by which our Sixth Formers benefit from the opportunity to mentor younger girls and boys from local state schools.” The youngsters are taught by teachers from the five state schools and are assisted by JLS Science technicians. “We are having a lot of fun and are very proud of the project and the progress the pupils are making,” said ISSP co-ordinator Miss Rachel Hughes, from Park High School.
SHINE’s Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, Elizabeth Brown said: “What drew SHINE to include this project in their Serious Fun on Saturday programme were the outstanding facilities and resources at the Science Department at The John Lyon School. This, allied with the creative Science curriculum delivered by excellent science teachers from Park High School, enabled the students from local schools to experience and enjoy aspects of physics through the title Exodus from the Earth.” The five schools with Year 8 children attending the classes are: Canons High, The Sacred Heart Language College, Highlands School, Park High and Harrow High.
