The John Lyon School is hosting the first-ever photography exhibition in its new art gallery, featuring work from three local schools.

The exhibition is open to all staff and students at The John Lyon School, to Harrow School’s photography department and to Northwood College.

John Lyon’s Head of Art, Miss Lorna Hope, said: “We invited everyone to submit entries based on the theme of People and Places and then shortlisted work was exhibited. Our technician, Daniela Tizzoni, worked with our gallery team to mount and display the show, which I curated.

Students aged from 11-18 therefore have their work professionally displayed alongside photographs taken by staff including teachers and also support staff, such as cleaners and technicians.

The John Lyon School (JLS) is part of the Harrow School Foundation and works closely with the famous boarding school on the Hill. JLS also has a partnership with Northwood College, a girls’ independent school. The exhibition features work from Harrow’s Head of Photography, Mr Darren Bell, and Northwood’s Head of Art Miss Shirley Ballantyne.

Miss Katherine Haynes, Head of The John Lyon School, said: “Our new gallery opened earlier this year and has already proved a valuable addition to our Art facilities. We are therefore delighted to open up this new facility to our friends and colleagues from Harrow School and Northwood College.”

The exhibition runs until 20 November. “We wanted to involve as many people as possible and it’s been exciting to see the high standard of work produced by staff and students at the three schools,” said Miss Hope. “We are looking forward to holding other exhibitions of art and photography in the coming months.”

The photography exhibition included a competition judged by former JLS pupil Stuart Haden, who is a leading professional documentary photographer. He won the School’s art prize himself while at the school in the late 1950s. The winners he chose are all pupils at JLS: two boys from Year 13 - Param Patel and Kasra Karimi - and Jake Modaresi, of Year 10.

The next exhibition in the gallery will be the JLS Christmas Open Exhibition in collaboration with the school’s Parents' and Friends’ Association, which will be on Thursday 3rd December, with a private view for parents and friends. The work will all be for sale, with the proceeds going to the school's current charity, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and a new seating area for boys.
