Bursaries and Scholarships PDF Print E-mail

The John Lyon School is committed to widening access for local families, enabling the sons of those who could not otherwise afford the fees to benefit from a top-quality independent school education. This corresponds to the original intention of John Lyon, who, when he founded Harrow School in 1572, stated that he wished to provide an education for boys in the parish.

JLS therefore annually offers a number of means-tested bursaries, as well as several scholarships awarded to boys able to demonstrate exceptional talent. For the academic year 2009-10, we awarded bursaries to a value of £434,689 and scholarships totalling £187,426. Over time, it is planned to minimise expenditure on scholarships in order to make more funding available for bursaries.

All Bursary and Scholarship applicants are required to sit our 11+ or 13+ entrance examinations in the January preceding entry. They are then automatically considered for Academic or All-Rounder Scholarships. Separate applications are required for Award Scholarships in Art & Design, Drama, Music and Sport. These candidates will sit additional tests or attend special interviews after the entrance examinations.

JLS and Harrow School take a co-ordinated approach to bursaries and scholarships. The two schools together comprise the Harrow Corporation. In the interests of openness and transparency, the Corporation’s Scholarships and Bursaries Policy is published here.
