All 100 pupils taking GCSEs at The John Lyon School achieved the Government’s benchmark of five passes at grades A*-C, with seven boys gaining nine or more A* grades apiece. The largest-ever Year 11 at the independent boys’ day school in Harrow improved further on last year’s impressive results. 91% of all grades awarded were A*, A or B – the best GCSE performance in the School’s 132-year history. Headmaster Kevin Riley said: “Congratulations to our boys on another superb set of results. This rounds off a great summer, following our equally impressive results at AS and A Level announced last week. “There were some truly remarkable individual performances, but what is also pleasing is the strength in depth represented by the achievements of 100 boys across a total of 945 GCSE examinations. Our results this summer represent a tribute to the dedication of our staff, to our systematic use of the most effective teaching and learning methods and, most of all, to the hard work of the boys themselves.” Highlights of the GCSE results included: “Many of our most academically successful boys are also strong performers in sport or the arts, proving that at JLS, good examination results are not incompatible with commitment to extra-curricular activities,” Mr Riley added. “For example, among our boys achieving nine A*s, Freddie Herman is one of our leading young actors and is a Music Scholar, while Ricky Sandhu and Thivanka Obeysekera are both leading lights in our cup-winning U15 cricket side.” The John Lyon School was founded in the 19th century by Harrow School to provide an education for local boys and still retains close links with the famous boarding school. Pupil numbers are restricted to 600 boys. ENDS Issued on behalf of The John Lyon School MEDIA CONTACTS: Mr Kevin Riley on 020 8872 8400 |
