Headmaster Kevin Riley and Bursar Nicholas Marten on site As the finishing touches are put to the new building over the summer, refurbishment and alterations will be carried out inside the School’s main building on Middle Road. A large temporary classroom block will also be removed during the summer holidays, freeing up additional playground space for the School’s 600 pupils. Headmaster Kevin Riley said: “This project is very exciting and will create state-of-the-art science and drama facilities for our boys - but in fact it’s just the start. Over the next few years, a whole series of changes at Middle Road and our Sudbury Hill sports grounds will give us the facilities we need to create excellence, particularly in music, art, the performing arts and sport. In line with our emphasis on healthy lifestyles, we will provide better facilities for School meals and will make better use of the historic Old Building. “Local residents will benefit, too, because the plans should result in less traffic coming into Harrow on the Hill and other road safety improvements on Middle Road.” o Eight new Science laboratories o Three new classrooms o Two drama studios o Three preparation rooms o Four staff resource bases. The new block, which adjoins the existing science department, has been designed by Harrow architects Kenneth Reed and Associates. The School’s Bursar, Nicholas Marten, who has overseen the work of principal contractor Apex Stephens, said: “The building is on an extremely tight site, with challenges of access and construction. We currently have a large mobile crane here, which is needed to lift steelwork high over trees. I would like to thank our neighbours for their patience during this project.” The new building is of conventional construction, comprising brick over a steel frame, with a tiled roof. The new build element of the project consists of two new labs and a drama studio, with the remainder of the new facilities resulting from alterations within the existing main building.
