This term the boys at JLS took on the challenging and intellectually demanding Brecht play 'The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui'. The play is consciously a highly satirical allegory of Adolf Hitler in Nazi Germany, whose rise Brecht represented in parallel to that of Ui. The play demands a very particular acting style in which actors are asked to avoid emotional involvement and demonstrate their characters. Year 12 student Ashwanth Ravindrarajah played the role of Arturo Ui – successfully portraying Ui's transformation from petulant, childlike, third-rate gangster to terrifying tyrant. Chasdip Phull and Milan Shah were also outstanding as side-kicks Givola & Roma. Richard Symonds, in his last autumn play at the school, showed real versatility and energy. The play was very successful with the cast achieving wonderful pace and energy . Below is a selection of images from the play.
