The John Lyon School has pulled off a remarkable cricketing hat trick by winning Middlesex county trophies at three different age levels.

This week’s defeat of Enfield Grammar School by The John Lyon School’s U15s to win the Rawlings Shield capped a tremendous summer for the 590-pupil independent boys’ school in Harrow.

Earlier in the season, the School’s U14s took the Middlesex Schools U14 Cup for the first time ever, while the U19s won the title for their age group for the second year in a row.

Headmaster Kevin Riley said: “It is no exaggeration to say this is a truly remarkable feat by our boys: for a relatively small school to win three county titles in one season must be very nearly unprecedented. I would like to pay tribute both to the boys and to the Sports staff, including Master i/c Cricket Ian Parker, for their hard work, dedication and skill in achieving such results.”

Mr Riley added that he recently met with John Emburey, Director of Cricket at Middlesex and a former England bowler, to discuss how the School and the county can work more closely together.

In the U15 final played at Hayes Cricket Club, The John Lyon School (JLS) lost the toss and were put in to bat. An attacking opening partnership between Amaan Patel and Finn Grist scoring 70 in the first ten overs got them off to a great start, with Patel scoring 56 and Grist 25. Thivanka Obeysekera scored a fluent 40, Shabeel Dhami 30 not out and Ravi Patel 22, which allowed the team to reach 215-7 in 30 overs.

“This was a challenging target, but Enfield started well, putting on 59 for the first wicket before Ravi Patel was brought into the attack and picked up the wickets of both openers, finishing with 3-8 from four overs,” said Mr Parker.

“This rapidly slowed down the pace of the Enfield innings, who eventually finished on 134-7 in 30 overs, with JLS winning by 81 runs.

Ravi Patel picked up the John Stacey trophy as man of the match.
