Well over a quarter of Upper Sixth-Formers at The John Lyon School achieved straight A grades in their A levels, confirming the School’s position as one of the top independent boys’ schools in the country.

Pupils and staff were today celebrating after 83% of all A Level grades awarded at JLS were at A or B – a figure bettered in the Harrow school’s 131-year history only by last year’s truly exceptional 89%. Over the last three years, the proportion of As and Bs has now averaged an impressive 83.3%.

Individual A Level successes at the School include many busy students who find time to excel in the arts or sport, as well as performing well in the classroom.

Headmaster Kevin Riley said: “I would like to congratulate our boys and the staff on another superb set of results. We are unashamedly an academic school, but we are certainly not just a ‘crammer’. I firmly believe that education should be about more than just passing exams, which is why I am so proud to see many of our sportsmen and actors among the high performers at A level. Increasingly we know that it is these kinds of qualities that the top 100 companies are looking for when recruiting graduates.”

Examination result highlights at the 600-pupil School include:

  • 19 boys out of 68 in Year 13 (28%) achieving straight As
  • Three As for Atif Siddiqui, of Ealing, who played one of the leads in last year’s School production of Grease and AAB for fellow actor, Nasri El-Sayegh, of Uxbridge, who had a leading role in this year’s musical, 42nd Street
  • All As and Bs for footballers Shane O’Neill and Theo Ohene, who both played for England in the Independent Schools Football Association’s national squad
  • Confirmed Oxbridge places for Nick Hallam, of Pinner, Ben Sehovic, of Sudbury, and Krishan Patel, of Ickenham, who all gained straight As
  • Four As and a distinction in his French Advanced Extension Award paper for Rishi Sethi, of Pinner – one of only a handful of distinctions awarded in the country.
  • A distinction for Year 12 boy Max Hird in his Advanced Extension Award for his AS in Critical Thinking.

Footballers score well at A level
Twins Tadeh and Narbeh Kraskian, of Pinner, achieved five As and one B between them. Both are already Manchester United season ticket-holders: Tadeh will now find travelling to Old Trafford a little easier after winning a place to read Economics at Manchester University! His brother secured a place at St George’s medical school.

The John Lyon School is an 11-18 day school with a maximum roll limited to 600 pupils. It was founded in the 19th century by Harrow School to provide an education for local boys and still retains close links with the famous boarding school.
