The Board of Governors has delegated authority from the Foundation Governors for all financial and strategic management decisions relating to The John Lyon School.

Mr Giles Goodfellow QC MA LLM – Chairman
Giles is Chairman of The John Lyon School Board of Governors and also a Foundation Governor. An Old Harrovian and former Harrow parent, he studied law at Cambridge University and Virginia Law School and worked as an attorney in Washington DC before returning to the English Bar where he specialises in tax law, particularly its contentious aspects. He has a keen interest in professional training and recruitment. Giles is a member of the Finance & General Purposes Committee.
Mr Kevin W B Gilbert BA FCA – Deputy Chairman
Kevin is Deputy Chairman of The John Lyon School Board of Governors and also a Foundation Governor. He is a retired accountant who was a partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Kevin is a member of several Foundation committees and on the Board of Directors of Harrow International Schools Limited. He is the Chairman of the Finance & General Purposes Committee.
Mr John H Dunston MA ACIL FRSA (OL)
John was Head of two independent schools between 1990 and 2010: Leighton Park School and Sibford School. He has been a Reporting Inspector for ISI since 2000 and an inspector trainer since 2009. He is a Tutor for the Farmington Institute at Harris Manchester College, Oxford and Chairman of Trustees of the Macular Society. John is a former Chairman of Council at the Francis Holland Schools and a former Governor of Shiplake College. Since 2007, he has been a Governor at The John Lyon School, where he chairs the Education Committee and sits on the Strategy Committee. John is an Old Lyonian.
Mrs Sue Symonds
Sue runs the Jinja Educational Trust in Uganda to support the children in the schools and orphanages there. She has been a Governor at The John Lyon School since 2007 and a Governor at Merchant Taylors’ Prep since 2006. Her son attended The John Lyon School from 2003 to 2008.
Professor Jagjit S Chadha BSc (Econ) MSc (Econ) (OL)
Jagjit is an academic economist and works on questions of monetary and financial policy. He was appointed as a Governor of the School in 2011 and sits on the Strategy Committee and Education Committee. He is an Old Lyonian and started at the School in 1978. He would be pleased to hear from boys, parents or members of the wider Lyonian network on matters concerning School governance.
Mr Richard M Fox LLB (Hons) (OL)
Richard has been with law firm Kingsley Napley for more than 30 years. He is Head of the Employment Department, Co-Heads their Business Services Group and is a Senior Partner. He is a former Chair of the Employment Lawyers Association (and is currently a Vice President) and a former President of the London Solicitors Litigation Association. Richard became a Governor in 2012 and is Chairman of the School’s Strategy Committee and is an Old Lyonian, having been at JLS between 1972 and 1979.
Mr George Stavrinidis BSc (Eng) MBA Dip(M) (OL)
George is an Old Lyonian who left after A-Levels in 1985. He is the Managing Director and one of the owners of Lone Worker Solutions Limited and has worked in the IT industry since graduating in Computer Science from Imperial College, London. George is a Non-Executive Director of several other high growth companies. He sits on the Finance and General Purposes Committee and is specifically involved in IT Strategy for the School.
Dr Sarbani Jollyman MB ChB MRCGP
Sarbani has been a General Practitioner for 17 years and works in Watford. Her practice has a long history of training both undergraduate medical students and junior doctors. She also undertakes medico-legal work in her capacity as an expert medical witness. Her eldest child recently left the Sixth Form of The John Lyon School where he was both a prefect and played leading roles on stage.
Mr J Mark PD Stroyan MA LLB
An Old Harrovian, Mark Stroyan is currently a Partner and Board Director of the international search firm, Spencer Stuart. Mark graduated from St Andrews University and the College of Law and prior to joining Spencer Stuart he practised law as a solicitor in the city. Mark is also Chairman of the Governors at Aysgarth Preparatory school.
Mr Ian Kendrick BEd (Hons) MA
Ian began teaching English at a comprehensive school in Nottingham in 1977. He entered the preparatory school world in 1979, becoming Head of English and a Housemaster at Cabin Hill (Campbell College Preparatory School) in Northern Ireland. In 1987 he moved to Dulwich College Preparatory School as Head of English, and returned to Cabin Hill as Headmaster in 1996. In January 2005 he became Headmaster of Durston House School in Ealing.
Mr David Tidmarsh BSc (Hons) PGCE
David started at Forest School in 1984, teaching Science and Chemistry to GCSE and A-Level in the boys’ and girls’ schools. After being Boarding Housemaster for boys aged 7 - 13, he was appointed Deputy Head of the Prep School and Curriculum Co-ordinator for Key Stage 2. In September 1998 he became Head of Reigate St Mary’s Preparatory and Choir School. During his five years at the school it became co-educational and became the Junior School to Reigate Grammar. David has been Headmaster of St Martin’s School, Northwood, a boys’ Prep School of 400 pupils, since September 2003. He is also a Governor of Aldenham and Northwood College.
Mr John Graham BSc (Hons) MRICS (OL)
John became a Governor in 2015 and is Chairman of the Estates Committee. He attended The John Lyon School from 1978 to 1985. After leaving The John Lyon School he read for a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying at Reading University and has since practised in London. John became Chartered in 1992 and has worked in private practice for over 26 years across both the property and infrastructure sectors, providing built asset consulting services to private clients and the public sector. He was a Senior Equity Partner at EC Harris for over 11 years before recently taking on a new role in 2014 as Divisional Director at Capita Property & Infrastructure to lead their Management South & International business. John is married to Mo, who was Deputy Head Girl at Heathfield School. They have 3 children and live in Hertfordshire.
Mr Liam Halligan MPhil(Econ) BSc(Hons) (OL)
Liam is an economist, writer and broadcaster. He is also an experienced business investor, having been a board member and partner of an international asset-management company working with leading pension funds, insurance companies, charities and sovereign wealth funds. A widely-respected economics commentator, Liam has been a reporter for The Economist, The Financial Times and Channel Four News and is now best-known for his award-winning weekly "Economics Agenda" column in The Sunday Telegraph. He remains a regular broadcaster, frequently appearing on BBC radio and television, CNN, Sky and RTE to provide economic and political commentaries. Liam is also a shareholder and Editor-at-Large at bne IntelliNews. He holds a First Class (Hons) degree in economics from the University of Warwick and an MPhil (Econ) from St Antony’s College, Oxford University. Liam came to John Lyon on a scholarship in 1980 and left in 1987 as Head Boy. He was the first person in his family to go to university.
Mr Neil Enright MA (Oxon), MBA, NPQH, FRSA (OL)
Since 2011, Neil has been the Headmaster of Queen Elizabeth’s School in Barnet, which has consistently been named in the national press in recent years as the country’s top state school for A-Level and GCSE results. He attended The John Lyon School as a pupil from 1989 to 1996. Following his undergraduate degree at Oxford and PGCE at London’s Institute of Education, Neil started teaching in 2000 in a mixed comprehensive in the London Borough of Brent. He moved to Queen Elizabeth’s in 2002. Before his appointment as Headmaster, he has been Head of Geography, Head of Year, Assistant Head and Deputy Head. Neil was awarded his National Professional Qualification for Headship in 2007 and an MBA in 2010. He is Chair of Governors at Northgate School, a Pupil Referral Unit for young people with severe mental health conditions, and his other current voluntary roles include being a governor of Longfield Primary School in Harrow and of St Albans High School for Girls.
Mrs Michelle Beresford-Smart
Michelle is a full time mother whose three sons have all attended The John Lyon School. She has also been a member of The John Lyon School PFA since 2014. Michelle has always been an active volunteer in school life managing the uniform shop at Quainton Hall School whilst also organising and supporting numerous fundraising activities
Mr Richard Winter, CBE FCA
Richard is a partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. He is a member of the Council of Wycombe Abbey School and, until recently was a Trustee and the treasurer of Save the Children and Chair of Medical Emergency Relief International (Merlin). Richard is also a John Lyon’s Foundation Governor.
